SPY - 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Klasse
Latest spy photos reveal two SLK prototypes parked alongside a current model.
It is really interesting to see that Mercedes-Benz is using two types of prototypes for testing the third generation of its SLK-Klasse. As you may be aware, in the photos, there is one FEP car, featuring a lower amount of camouflage, and a heavily camouflaged SLK. This situation might draw certain interesting conclusions. Mercedes-Benz could be undergoing tests for:
- the forthcoming AMG version of the SLK(although the AMG prototypes have certain features that depict such models) OR
- for a new alternative drive technology, like a hybrid powertrain OR
- for a new supermodel, such a mini-SLS AMG(which we wrote about in 3 occassions:1,2,3), and the SLK is temporarily used as a test mule
The overall dimensions of the new SLK will slightly grow, whereas the body styling will borrow lines and details from the SLS AMG. The German constructor has also prepared a new range of powerful and efficient powerplants for its compact roadster, such as a 2.2 liters CDI 204 BHP unit, a twin-turbo V6 gasoline engine, tipped to deliver around 350 BHP, or the top-of-the-range SLK 55 AMG, benefitting from a new V8 biturbo engine, showcasing no less than 470 BHP.
The first details on the new SLK are expected to be released towards the end of 2010, with the public reveal taking place at the beginning of the next year, at Detroit or at Geneva.
