The S-Class of the W 126 series is one of the most popular luxury Benzes ever produced. The car was premiered at the IAA Frankfurt in September 1979 and its complete lifespan lasted over 12 years;only in the US, throughout this period, 127,000 people bought the illustrious flagship, whereas in the important European markets, such as Germany, France or Italy, combined, the number W 126 models sold was of about 28,000 examples. A choice of 4 power units was available from the start of sales, as well as 3 body versions:the standard limousine, the coupe and an extended wheelbase sedan. Safety features included airbags(from 1981-the driver one;from 1985-the front passenger one), belt tensioners, as well as a thoroughly-studied structure and passenger cell, that could withstand an offset crash at a speed of 55 km/h.
